City of Athens – Acropolis - Museum

Duration: 4 – 4,5 hours

Athens is the capital of modern Greece. It was named after the ancient goddess Athena, who was also the protector of the city. In antiquity, it was a powerful city-state and a leading centre of culture. Along with Rome, it is considered the most historic city in Europe. Art, politics, sciences and much of what constitutes modern Western culture, were born and flourished here. Many historical monuments have survived at least in part through the centuries, despite successive hardships. These give us valuable evidence about the ancient Greeks and their culture.

We will pick you up from your hotel, anywhere else you wish in Athens or the Cruise terminal and guide you through Athens. We start from the Acropolis and the Sacred Rock, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city. We will see the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Nike. From there we go down to the temple of Zeus and continue to the Panathenaic Stadium where the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896. Then we continue to Syntagma Square and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in front of the Greek Parliament. As we proceed to Panepistimiou Street, we see the neoclassical buildings of Athens, the Catholic Church and the Academy of the University. We then continue on to the Acropolis Museum which is a recent investment with an international character which was made by the Greek state. It was designed to accommodate a significant volume of antiquities with the aim of catering to the growing volume of visitors from around the world.

Delphi – Full Day Excursion

Duration: 9 – 10 Hours

We will pick you up from your hotel or anywhere else you prefer in Athens or at the Cruise terminal.

We will then leave Athens and go to Livadia, then on to Arachova and finally reach Delphi. Delphi is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, and is on a par with the Acropolis in Athens. It is situated in a spectacular site within stunningly beautiful landscape and, as it was home to the most famous oracle in ancient Greece, it was the cultural and religious centre which united of the Greek world for centuries.

It is also known for the legend with tells of the two eagles sent by Zeus, one to the East and one to the West, to find the centre of the world. They met above Delphi, at the navel (centre) of Delphi, which symbolized the centre of the world (Strabo 9,419).

The most important monuments at the site are:

⦁ The Temple of Apollo
⦁ The Treasure of the Athenians
⦁ The Ancient Theatre of Delphi
⦁ The Delphi Gymnasium
⦁ The Stoa of the Athenians
⦁ The Ancient Delphi Stadium
⦁ The Delphi Archaeological Museum

Mycenae and Epidaurus

Duration: 9-10 Hours

We will begin our excursion from your hotel, anywhere else you would like in Athens, or your cruise terminal.

We begin our one-day excursion, leaving Athens in the morning and taking the coastal highway to the Corinth Canal, a true engineering and architectural feat. From there, we head to Argolis and arrive at Mycenae, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to mythology and to the writing of Homer, this was the city of Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks during the Trojan War. Henry Schliemann managed to locate Mycenae using Homer’s epic work as a guide.

After Mycenae, our excursion will continue to Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, with the impressive Palamidi Castle which looks over the city. We will then go on to visit Epidaurus, specifically the Epidaurus Asclepius, which was the most important healing centre. This is said to have been the birthplace of Apollo’s son Asclepius.

The Theatre of Epidaurus, which was built in the third century BC, is the best preserved of the ancient Greek theatres and is still used today for the Epidaurus Festival. It has amazing acoustic properties and seats about 12,000 spectators.

Sounio - Temple of Poseidon

Duration: 3.5 – 4 hours

Great choice for cruise ship passengers.

The impressive temple of Neptune in Sounio, Attica is located on the south eastern edge of Athens on the coastal road from Athens to Saronida. You can enjoy the magnificent view of the bay as we pass the amazing beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, as well as the wonderful Lagonissi tourist resort in Saronida and then on to Sounio.

Once you reach the rocky edge of Sounio, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Saronic Gulf as well as the islands opposite, near the temple of Poseidon.

The temple of Poseidon was built in Sounio by the Athenians so the ancient Greeks could pray to the god of the sea, Poseidon. It was also built here because this is an important strategic point, since the city-state of Athens controlled the sea passage to the Aegean Sea and Piraeus, its central port, as well as the Lavrotiki peninsula with its rich silver mines.

We will pick you up from your hotel or from anywhere else in Athens that suits you better.

Meteora

Duration: 11 – 12 hours

We will visit one of the most beautiful places in Greece, the Meteora. The Meteora are known all over the world for the natural beauty of the rocks and the monasteries perched on top of them.

The first monks arrived in the area in the 11th century. In the decades that followed, they built many monasteries on some of the cliffs, using only materials that they could find and carry up in baskets to altitudes of up to 400 m. The most important of these monasteries is the Great Meteora which was built in the 14th century.

Nowadays, you can climb up to the monasteries using the steps that have been cut into the rocks.

The Meteora offer the visitor the opportunity to enjoy one of the best and most beautiful panoramic views, not only in Thessaly, but in the whole of Greece.

It is believed that rock formations took at least 60 million years to emerge and that their present shape is a result of earthquakes and weather.
